The siesta is the most obvious example. A midday rest, practiced across the Mediterranean, Latin America, parts of Asia, and historically across much of the world. It is often dismissed as laziness or a relic of pre-industrial life.
The research tells a different story.
A 2007 study published in the Archives of Internal Medicine followed over 23,000 Greek adults for six years. Those who took regular midday naps had a 37% lower risk of coronary mortality than those who didn’t. The effect was strongest in working men. This is not a small finding.
The siesta was not born out of laziness. It was born out of observation: people who rested at midday lived and worked better. The cultures that preserved this observation were right.
Japan: inemuri.
Japanese culture has a practice called inemuri — literally ‘sleeping while present.’ Brief sleep on trains, in meetings, at desks. Far from being considered disrespectful, it is often interpreted as evidence of hard work — you are so dedicated that you work until you need to rest.
The cultural framing is specific to Japan, but the underlying practice — brief, regular rest integrated into the day — is consistent with the research on napping. Short naps of 10 to 20 minutes improve alertness, cognitive performance, and mood without producing sleep inertia. Longer naps can interfere with nighttime sleep.
Ayurveda: rest as part of the daily rhythm.
Ayurvedic medicine prescribes the dinacharya — the daily routine — as a cornerstone of health. It includes specific times for waking, eating, and resting, structured around the body’s natural energy rhythms across the day.
The midday period, from approximately noon to 2pm, is considered a time of kapha dominance in Ayurvedic theory — a slower, heavier energy that is naturally conducive to rest. The prescription for most constitutions includes a brief rest or reduced activity during this window.
The specific language is traditional. The underlying observation — that the body has a natural dip in alertness in the early afternoon — is confirmed by modern circadian research. The post-lunch dip is real and it is biological, not caused by lunch itself.
What this means now.
Most modern working environments don’t allow for a midday rest. We understand that. But the principle — that the body benefits from rest periods integrated into the day, not just at night — can be applied in smaller ways.
A 20-minute break from screens at midday. A walk outside. Five minutes of deliberate stillness. These are not the same as a proper siesta, but they work with the same biological logic.
The afternoon dip is not a sign that you need more coffee. It’s a signal from your biology that it wants a pause. Every culture that got longevity right listened to that signal.
