Aloe vera: 4,000 years of documented use.

The Egyptians called it the plant of immortality. They included it in the tombs of pharaohs alongside gold and precious objects. This was not superstition. It was reverence for something that reliably worked.

Egyptian papyri dating to 1550 BCE document aloe preparations for burns, infections, and skin conditions. Greek physicians Dioscorides and Pliny documented its use in the first century CE. Roman soldiers carried it during campaigns for wound treatment. Ayurvedic medicine has used it for thousands of years under the name kumari — meaning young girl, for its skin-renewing properties. Chinese medicine documented it from at least 700 CE. Indigenous peoples across Central America cultivated it before European contact.

Five civilizations. Different continents. Different languages. Different centuries. The same plant.

When five independent civilizations across thousands of years and multiple continents all document the same plant doing the same things, the most reasonable conclusion is that it does those things.

What we now know.

Modern analysis has identified over 75 active compounds in aloe vera gel: vitamins A, C, E, and B12; minerals including calcium, magnesium, and zinc; enzymes; amino acids; and several categories of polysaccharides and anthraquinones.

The primary polysaccharide, acemannan, has demonstrated wound-healing, anti-inflammatory, and immune-modulating properties in controlled research. The anthraquinones show antimicrobial activity. The mucilaginous gel forms an occlusive layer that supports moisture retention and barrier function.

The clinical evidence is strongest for wound healing, burn treatment, and reduction of skin inflammation. The anti-aging claims are more variable — the mechanisms are plausible, but the clinical data is thinner and less consistent. We’re being specific about this distinction because it matters.

What this means in practice.

Aloe is not a trend ingredient. It is one of the most time-tested botanical actives in existence. It earns its place in formulas because 4,000 years of documented use and a growing body of clinical research both point in the same direction.

As with any ingredient, the concentration matters, the formulation matters, and the application matters. Aloe gel straight from the plant is different from processed aloe in a moisturiser. But the core properties — soothing, hydrating, supporting the skin barrier — are consistent across formulations.

The plant didn’t change. Our understanding of why it works did. Both things are worth knowing.
