How to actually read a skincare label.

The relationship between skincare marketing and skincare ingredients is approximately the same as the relationship between a restaurant menu and what happens in the kitchen. The menu is designed to be appealing. The kitchen is where the actual product is made.

Reading a skincare label is how you go from the menu to the kitchen.

The ingredient list: the basics.

Cosmetic ingredients in the EU and US are listed using INCI names — International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients. These are standardised Latin or scientific names that appear on labels worldwide.

Like food labels, ingredients are listed in descending order by concentration, down to 1%. Below 1%, they can appear in any order. The first five to seven ingredients typically make up the bulk of the formula.

Water (aqua) is the most common first ingredient in most water-based products. This is expected and neutral. A product listing water first is not inferior — it is describing the base of the formula.

If an ingredient you care about appears near the bottom of a long list, it is present in very small amounts. This matters for actives: an ingredient at 0.001% concentration is not delivering the same benefit as one at 5%.

How to decode the names.

Natural-sounding ingredient: glycerin. INCI name: glycerin. Glycerin is a humectant — it draws moisture to the skin. It is derived from plant or animal fats and is one of the most consistently effective hydrating ingredients in skincare. Inexpensive, well-tolerated, abundant in research.

Intimidating-sounding ingredient: methylparaben. This is a preservative from the paraben family — one of the most studied preservative systems in cosmetics. The safety data on parabens is substantial and broadly reassuring at the concentrations used in cosmetics. The ‘paraben-free’ marketing trend reflects consumer anxiety more than scientific concern.

Impressive-sounding ingredient: sodium hyaluronate. This is hyaluronic acid — a humectant that holds up to 1,000 times its weight in water. It is effective at hydrating the surface of the skin. The ‘plumping’ claims are real but temporary — it does not permanently change skin structure.

What to look for.

Actives at effective concentrations: retinol (0.025% to 1%), niacinamide (2% to 10%), vitamin C as L-ascorbic acid (10% to 20%), hyaluronic acid (0.1% to 2%), AHAs (glycolic, lactic) at 5% to 10%.

A functional preservative system: products with water in them need preservatives to prevent microbial growth. Phenoxyethanol, sodium benzoate, parabens, and others are all functional and safe at standard concentrations. An unpreserved water-based product is a health risk.

The absence of known irritants for your skin: fragrance (parfum or fragrance on the label) is the most common cause of contact dermatitis in cosmetics. If your skin is sensitive or reactive, fragrance-free formulations reduce your risk.

You don’t need a chemistry degree. You need to know what you’re looking for, where it should appear on the list, and roughly at what concentration it does what it claims to do. That’s a learnable skill.
