Shinrin-yoku: being outside is medicine.

In the 1980s, Japan was experiencing a significant problem with karoshi — death from overwork. Long hours, high stress, disconnection from natural environments. The government, in a response that would seem unusual in most countries, formally promoted the practice of shinrin-yoku: forest bathing.

Not forest hiking. Not forest exercise. Just being in a forest. Walking slowly. Breathing. No destination. No performance.

They began funding research to understand why it worked. What they found was significant.

The Japanese government formally recognized forest bathing as a health practice in 1982. The research that followed became some of the most replicated work in environmental health.

What the research found.

Dr. Qing Li at Nippon Medical School in Tokyo conducted a series of studies on the physiological effects of time in forest environments. The findings were consistent across studies and populations:

Time in forested environments significantly reduces cortisol levels — the primary stress hormone. The reduction is measurable in blood and urine within hours.

Blood pressure decreases. Heart rate decreases. The parasympathetic nervous system (rest and digest) becomes more active. The sympathetic nervous system (stress response) becomes less active.

Natural killer (NK) cell activity increases significantly. NK cells are a component of the immune system that responds to viral infection and abnormal cells. The increase persisted for up to 30 days after a two-day forest visit in Li’s research.

The proposed mechanism involves phytoncides — aromatic compounds released by trees, particularly conifers. These appear to have direct effects on immune function when inhaled.

What this means if you don’t live near a forest.

The research is strongest for dense natural environments with trees. But related research on urban parks, green spaces, and time near water shows similar if less pronounced effects. The key variables appear to be natural stimuli, absence of urban noise and visual complexity, and reduced demand on directed attention.

In South Florida, this means the parks, the water, the natural areas. The beach at early morning. The Everglades. The neighbourhood parks with old trees. None of it requires a flight to a Japanese forest.

Even 20 minutes in a green space shows measurable cortisol reduction in research. This is not a significant time commitment for a meaningful effect.

Being outside is not leisure. It is a biological need. The research supports this. The ancient traditions understood it. Modern life is the anomaly.
